The Phillips’ Blotting Technique is a method of oral care that effectively removes plaque. Plaque is the sticky, white substance that forms on the teeth, between them, and in the crevice between the teeth and gums, known as the sulcus. Quite simply, plaque is the root cause of dental disease. While conventional brushing tends to move plaque around the mouth—and often pushes it further beneath the gums—the Phillips’ Blotting Technique is the only proven oral hygiene method that actually removes plaque from the mouth. This is the key to achieving lifelong oral health. The technique itself is based on capillary action—the same principle by which a sponge absorbs liquid or paint is drawn into the bristles of a brush. In the same way, capillary action lifts and traps plaque within the bristles, allowing it to be effectively removed. Even if you brush thoroughly, your mouth remains 90% unclean, as teeth make up only 10% of the mouth’s total surface area. This is why it’s just as important to clean the gums, cheeks, tongue, roof, and floor of the mouth. Learn how to eliminate bad breath without relying on mouthwash. The Phillips’ Blotting Technique addresses all these areas—and more. One of the simplest ways to maintain a youthful appearance is by keeping your teeth and gums healthy. According to the American Dental Association, 95% of people lose their teeth due to gum disease—not tooth decay. Find notes from Dr Phillips in the Suggested Use.

ORAL WELLNESS MADE EASY BY DR. J.E. PHILLIPS (FROM HIS PERSONAL NOTES)
As a practicing periodontist, I have seen many people go through periodontal surgery only to have a repeat surgery and lose their teeth anyway. Then they still spend great sums of money to get implants only to finally succumb to dentures, and in many cases, are not able to eat nutritious food due to the inability to chew. This method of mouth care can insure you good oral health and, in most cases, reverse periodontally affected teeth back to good health even though you have been told by a periodontist that you are beyond any hope of healing. I have known many who had two or more surgeries and were told there was absolutely no way to save these teeth, and 20 years later still experience healthy dentition. Progressive physicians keep telling you, “you must take charge of your health.” Well, taking care of your oral health is very important toward maintaining your general health.
There is no question that periodontal disease can have a bearing on your general health. For example, if you have gum problems, you will produce a bacteremia (bacteria in the blood stream) every time you chew. This can increase the chances for heart disease, focal infections, arthritis and many other diseases. Your chewing ability or disability can cause many intestinal problems. In fact, there is good reason to believe that if your mouth is healthy and functions well, your complete immune system is strengthened. I’ve had many people tell me that once they learned proper mouth care, many of these so called problems decreased or were eliminated. In my many years of periodontal practice, I have had patients from many states and many countries come to me because they were told nobody could do anything for them. I always say I can’t heal your periodontal problems, but I can teach you how and help you resolve your problems.

Q: What is the Phillips Blotting Brush used for?
A: The Phillips Blotting Brush is designed for a unique oral care technique that removes plaque using capillary action, rather than simply moving it around like traditional brushing.
Q: How does blotting differ from regular brushing?
A: Unlike conventional brushing, which often pushes plaque around or under the gums, blotting lifts plaque from the teeth and gum margins and holds it in the brush for effective removal.
Q: Is the brush suitable for sensitive gums?
A: Yes, the Phillips Blotting Brush uses ultra-fine, round-end nylon bristles (0.007″ diameter) that are exceptionally gentle on gums while still being effective at removing plaque.
Q: Who can use the Phillips Blotting Brush?
A: The brush is suitable for adults and particularly beneficial for those with gum sensitivity, gum disease, or those seeking a gentler yet more effective oral hygiene method.
Q: How often should I use the blotting technique?
A: It is recommended to use the Phillips Blotting Brush at least twice a day, just as you would with a regular toothbrush, ideally after meals.
Q: Do I need toothpaste when using the blotting technique?
A: No, toothpaste is not necessary. The blotting technique relies on mechanical action to remove plaque, and works effectively without foaming agents.
Q: Can the Phillips Blotting Brush help with bad breath?
A: Yes, by thoroughly cleaning not only the teeth but also the tongue, cheeks, gums, and roof of the mouth, the technique helps eliminate the bacteria that cause bad breath.
Q: How do I clean the blotting brush after use?
A: Simply rinse the brush thoroughly under warm water, shake off excess moisture, and store it in its blotter cover to help maintain the bristles' shape and hygiene.
Q: How often should I replace the blotting brush?
A: For best results, replace your brush every 2–3 months, or sooner if the bristles become frayed or deformed.
Q: Can children use the Phillips Blotting Brush?
A: This version is designed for adults, but children can benefit from a similar technique with a specially designed children’s blotting brush—consult your dental professional for guidance.
