In the next phase, participants took daily supplements of 2.5 milligrams (mg) of folic acid, 50 mg of vitamin B6, and 1 mg of B12 for 4 weeks before being exposed to high levels of PM2.5 pollution. These dosages are significantly higher than the daily intake recommended by the Institute of Medicine, which suggests just 400 micrograms (mcg) of folate, 1.3 to 1.7 mg of B6, and 2.4 mcg of B12. The study's results were striking, showing that such high-dose supplementation could mitigate the genetic and mitochondrial damage caused by air pollution almost entirely.
